For What Its Worth

I have been a fan of Stevie Nicks for as long as I can remember… my mom use to sing Landslide in the car to me and Rhiannon. Her words and image have inspired me in more ways that I can count… and I think its a blessing to have someone so sincere, beautiful and talented in our world. She invites you in and gives you a little love and sends you back out into the world to make your dreams come true!

This is the second single from her new album “In Your Dreams”… it is called “For What Its Worth” and it’s amazing…its one of my favorites and this is the new video. Came out today… stunning!

Even if you aren’t a fan… watch it… just give it a chance :)

In Your Dreams

This has been a magical weekend in London. I have been here since Wednesday and I have found my way around very easily. I have had to let go of a lot of fears and just step into the unknown and it has been amazing. So many wonderful things have happened and I know it’s only the beginning.

I am really loving my job working with Laura Dawson and she is a wonderful person. So far I have been allowed to work on one of my own designs with guidance from her and the two of us have been drafting patterns for it and doing some draping. I like seeing the process from a more professional standpoint. There are a lot of things in fashion design that are a little uninspiring and just plain boring, especially when it comes to the technical stuff… but so far I am interested!

On Sunday I had to fetch a few samples, which meant learning to take the bus to another part of town, and then we picked up the actual fabric bolt in the car… which was the most daunting thing I have ever done. It took almost an hour to park because of all the street markets that set up on Sundays in London.  But it was a learning experience none the less.

Yesterday evening I went to Hyde Park for the Hard Rock Calling concert to see Stevie Nicks. As most of you know she is one of my heroes and I have followed her music forever. I love her and I am totally inspired by her. I have wanted to see her in concert for a while now and I found out that she would be performing while I am here in London so I told myself I had to go.

I was a little afraid to go at first because I was unsure of the venue. I didn’t know if it was going to be sectioned off or opened and I didn’t know what the area was like. But I went for it because I wont be in Cincinnati when she plays there this summer… so it was my only chance. And once I got there my fears were dissolved. Everyone was friendly and helpful and of course Hyde Park was beautiful.

Stevie Nicks was brilliant on stage. She sounded wonderful and looked stellar. Stevie channeled Janis Joplin when she wore her aviator sunglasses on stage to block out the sun because it was sizzling hot and beaming right in her face.  The crowed loved her too and people danced and cheered with each song and they were especially alive on the tracks like Stand Back and Edge of Seventeen. The energy was sort of pulsing and spiritual and you could tell Stevie felt it.

The concert was phenomenal. I was so excited to see her. It felt surreal to be seeing someone whom inspires me so much on such an important trip. I felt that seeing her was a blessing on what I am doing here in London. I have said it many times and I will say it again, this is a special trip; this is a trip that will change my soul… a little piece of my destiny. Last night I thought my trip was made and that nothing could top it.

Today the icing was put on the cake when I went to a CD signing in Oxford Circus for the release of Stevies’ new album In Your Dreams. Today was the official release date here in the UK and to promote it she did her second CD signing ever. I went and stood in line for a few hours and made friends with some wonderful people as I waited to get inside. We knew we would only get a few moments once we made it to her table, long enough to get our CD signed and say a quick hello… but it was so worth it. All of us were so eager, nervous and totally enthralled.

Once I finally made it to her I was so excited. It was such a surreal moment to be standing face to face with her… with STEVIE NICKS!!! She is such a legend and talent, and it never occurred to me that this moment would be happening until it finally came!

She was a very sweet lady, whom pulled you in with her warm eyes and gentle gestures. She asked my name in order to sign my cd and when I told her she complemented me telling me that it was such a beautiful name. And she asked me to spell it for her to make sure she didn’t get it wrong. She even stopped to reread it again. Then I took her hand and told her how much she has inspired me and for a moment I felt like something magical had taken place. With all her gypsy, high priestess power she blessed me and changed a little piece of what I am here to do in life.

I walked away knowing that this trip is still the most significant thing I have ever done and the fact that I was able to see her and meet her made it all the more so. I am a huge believer in signs and to know that I came here from America and my favorite singer came here at the same time to perform a rare show and do an almost unheard of cd signing is just mind blowing. I am really thankful for all of this and I am so totally moved.

I look forward to what exciting thing may happen next. I know that there are many more things to come here in London and I know it is all beautiful and wonderful. I urge you all to be inspired and to know that you can have anything In Your Dreams. So please go buy the new CD… go dance and sing and be happy!

Much Love,

Shaheen

To the rainbows edge

The amazing thing about being on such a big adventure is that you find out what your really made of. There is something extremely spiritual and gratifying about looking out and seeing the whole world beneath you and knowing that you can take your wings and go wherever you please.

Part of me is terrified and feels like a lost little child; looking out the window felt surreal as if I was running away… Did ask for permission to leave? But I realize now that there is no one to ask and I am not a child… I am a free spirit taking on the world!

I have never expected anyone to do anything for me. I have never asked anyone to make my dreams come true and I have never let anyone hold me back. Though at times I have had to dig deep and find my bravery… I always follow what my soul says… And I know that is the key to truly living life.

The world is big and following dreams can be daunting… It can be extreme, but in the end it’s completely magical. It may sound cliche but I don’t want to ever regret not doing something. If I at least try then I can say I did my best.

So here I am on what so many have titled the adventure of a life time, knowing that this is only the first step… The opening of the door. From here on I will look my fears in the eye and challenge them to keep me from going. I am here on a mission to be a poet… A story-teller… A gypsy. I am here to know what lives inside my wild heart.

I ask you to trust the call of your spirit longing to be free. Let go of the mundane, the routine and the typical. Be a free bird making nothing but your dreams your home. I believe that half the work of making a dream come true is just realizing you are meant to be dream.

Never tell yourself you cannot do it! The angels will give you wings and Spirit will hold your hand… So find your gypsy spirit and give your art to the world!

“If I live to see the seven wonders i’ll make a path to the rainbows end… I’ll never live to match the beauty again… The rainbows end” -Stevie Nicks

I love all your gypsy souls,

Shaheen

Poets, Legends, Priest of Nothing

I think everyone needs someone or thing that keeps them inspired and really motivates them to follow their dreams. That person for me is Stevie Nicks. She is one of the many magical, fairy Godmothers that I look up to in my life and she has been for a very long time.

Her timeless, mystical and emotive persona has become something very familiar to me over the years. As a little kid I can remember being totally enthralled by her songs and thinking how she so eloquently put into words the things that live in my imagination and spirit.

The many songs that she has penned and performed solo and as the lead singer of Fleetwood Mac have become staples on my ipod and they have been the energy behind so many journal entries, projects and writing of my own.

I’ve known my entire life that I came here to be a storyteller. I tell stories with my cards, I tell stories with my garments, I tell stories with my poems and songs. Ms. Nicks has given me the courage to embrace my place as a storyteller.

So let me ask, “What story are you telling? “

Stevie Nicks has been pulling us into her little world since the 70s and decade after decade she has given us wonderful music.

Here is my favorite version of Edge of Seventeen… such a dark and moody song that really energizes me.

And here is a wonderful song from her MUST HAVE new album IN YOUR DREAMS! Its called Annabel Lee, from the poem by Edgar Allen Poe.

Dancing In the Storm

The rain has been falling for days as a reminder to me and to the world that it is time to wash away the hurt and the pain… its time to wash away the shell that we have built around us to make us numb to our feelings. It’s okay sometimes to be stormy and to totally lose composure. Sometimes you have to dance with the fire in order heal the burn.

I have watched so many people push their feelings and emotions away. Locking them tightly inside like Pandora and her cursed box. It’s within that they build and become insidious, finally finding a way to bubble to the surface… they peak their heads out eventually, saying, “hey remember me the nasty little creature you locked away long ago?”

Its time to face our fears, dance in the dark, pull off the mask and break it. Its time to live a little because until you learn to let loose and actually be with the wind, the rain and the water, you are only going to drawn under the pressure. Eventually something has to be done, some form of spiritual house cleaning.

I keep hearing the famous line from Fleetwood Mac’s Dreams, “When the rain washes you clean you’ll know” and I think I am beginning to understand the process of cleansing. There are still so many layers to break through, to wash away and to really come face to face with. One thing I know is now its time, time to get back to basics and time to get back to spirit.

I want to stand outside and spin until all the colors of blue, black and purple swirl into gray, until the ground and the sky rumble as one. I want to spin until I become the eye of the storm. I want to spin until there is nothing left but the rotation of change. I want to spin until I am one with the great wheel of the universe. The truth of dancing with the chaos is finally settling into my bones.

The only way to the light is through the dark. I think that having a beautiful, peaceful and spiritual life is all about learning to move and bend. Spiritually we must be like a tree in a great storm… if we are rigid and unwilling to move, then parts of use begin to crack and break and eventually our foundation will be pulled away. Movement is key in all of this. Movement is among the most important spiritual keys to follow.

I ask you to stand in the rain and rage with the thunder and be cleansed by the water and then as all the layers of fear, pain and negativity fall away declare, “This is MY life and MY truth. I will move with spirit and dance with destiny.”

Take from this rain the truth that there are signs everywhere speaking to us, asking us to pay a little closer attention. Signs come from everywhere and they may be global or personal, just look for the essence of everything and allow yourself to connect with the essence of everything rather than the shell.

So much love,

Shaheen

Secret Love

One of my biggest inspirations is Stevie Nicks, the legenardy, magical rock and roll goddess. She is the front woman for Fleetwood Mac. She has had an extrodinary career in Fleetwood Mac and as a solo artist. Renound for her raspy vocals and bewitching lyrics, and etherial dress. She has become a muse to many people from designers, to musicians, to writers.

As a writer I have been inspired by her use of words and poetry to tell deeply emotional and impacting stories. Every song she writes is a combination of truth and mystery. She has a way of taking people to another world and helping them to feel something deep and moving… whether it be love, the loss of it or something a little edgier. And her style of dress has always been part gypsy, part sorceress and all rock and roll.

As a designer I have found myself going back to her clothing again and again for ideas. The silhouettes, colors, texture and details are all phenomenal and her clothes are completely couture. She is just so timeless and graceful. She has been rocking out since the 70s and she is still extremely beautiful and mesmerizing.

If you are a Stevie fan there is some wonderful news, on May 3, 2011 her new studio album “In Your Dreams” will be released. So far it seems to be very promising. Wonderful tracks filled with her signature moody vocals and her wonderful lyrics. I have seen pictures and heard a few snippers of songs and I LOVE everything about it. This time around she is really taking people into her little world, which is nothing but pure magic.

Today her new Video “Secret Love” was released. It is the video to the albums first single which came out a few months ago. There was talk of the video coming out sooner, but it wasn’t released until today. No worries though… the video is phenomenal. So many wonderful things happening in it. A great story can be seen in the video, it seems to be a nostalgic reflection of her wonderful gypsy, carnival ride of a life. Definitely filled with emotion and feeling.

Below is the video for the new single “Secret Love” and also a promo video for her album “In Your Dreams” …hope you love it!
