How to Pray with Tarot Cards

416px-'Around_the_Moon'_by_Bayard_and_Neuville_21Prayer is touching the Divine with reverence…handing over your hopes, fears and dreams and then listening for a response.

Most people pray daily, whether or not it’s a sacred solemn hour of prayer or quick “note to God” in the car… most people pray! But rarely do they listen.

The heart of prayer is true communication which is the act of sharing, listening, receiving and contemplating. Yet, most prayers are superficial, not to say they come from a superficial place, but most prayers only touch the surface, not the heart and depth of your concerns. You must explore the depth of your need, concern or intention.

Have you ever thought about praying with Tarot?

The cards offer a beautiful language for dialogue with the Universe. Why not touch the Divine by praying with Tarot? The magic lies in the two way communication created through the cards. You pray through the cards, asking, sharing, exploring, listening and receiving. Spirit hears your prayer and offers a response.

Passivity in prayer is a downfall. Your spiritual right is to co-create your world with the Universe. You aren’t a helpless puppet falling prey to the whim and fancy of some person in the sky! You are a vibrant, energetic being casting beautiful rays into the world! You are DIVINE!

Pray like you are DIVINE!

Pray like you are empowered. Pray like you are an artist. Pray like you are sexy. Pray like you are wild and free. Pray like you are living. Pray like you are a goddess. Pray like you are a ready to receive!

Prayer is a partnership! Pray as a creator. Pray and listen. Pray and communicate! Pray doesn’t come through self-entitlement or helplessness.

You’ll have extreme moments. Moments when you are breaking down. Moments when you are struggling through the dark, consumed by doubt and trauma. It is human nature to reach out to Spirit in our darkest hour… in desperation for salvation. Even in despair you must find the grace to listen.

Prayer is sacred time, and sacred space. I approach Spirit as an old, familiar friend. I open my heart, and mind. I become vulnerable. I hold my cards reverently. I call out to Spirit. Confiding in, and expressing my thoughts, feelings, wants and needs. Asking. Then listening.

I let Spirit Speak back through the cards before me.

Open the door through prayer, and then invite Spirit in to speak through the wisdom of the cards. Allow your the Universe to unfold before you. Allow your Spirit Circle to be with you. Let Tarot be a bride between you, Spirit, and your own soul.

Do not just open the door with prayer; use Tarot to invite the wisdom of the Universe and your guides in. Tarot is a bridge for you to communicate with the Universe… and your soul.

Connect with Spirit in a way that gives you the power to find your next path. Rather than asking for intercession, pray by asking questions, then listening for answers.

Express to Spirit your trouble or concern.

Then go deeper. Take a new approach. Express yourself, then ask for clarity. Ask the question:

What is the true source of my concern or issue (you can use specifics here)?

Now pull 3 cards.

What do you see? What clarity did the cards bring? Did your perspective change? What block has stifled you?

Respond back. Pull a card that represents your response. This is a symbolic gesture that you’ve heard the Universe. Reiterate to the Universe what you’ve discovered through asking!

Let yourself be fluid here. There is no right or wrong. Use the cards to give life to your inner world. Let the images, meanings, colors and textures express your response to the Universe.

Clarity is the essence of prayer.

Go deeper. Continue your dialogue. Explore the depths of your question by asking my questions. There is no limit to what you can ask, or how deep you can go. Spirit sees no stupid questions. The more you ask the more you understand.

Look for an actionable step. Now that you understand where you are, you want to find a step to move forward. It can be a baby step, or a leap. Spirit will now what is best for you. Ask the question:

What is the best possible step forward for me at this time?

Or find your own way of asking. The clearer you are, the better Spirit can help you.

Change comes through shifting energy. If you find the source of your problem, you can change it. Since ancient times we have known that there is power in a name. So dig deep into the root of your prayer.

Meditate on the cards that turned up here. Take them in. You should have clarity about your next steps forward. And remember this can be a power thought, an intention or a feeling… rather than a specific, tangible step.

Now you can layout your intend path using the wisdom Spirit has shared.

Choose cards that express how you wish to move forward with this new knowledge. How do you want the energy to flow forward? What feels good to you now? What would feed your spirit? Trust yourself here. Be the artist of your reality. The Universe will workout the details.

Lay out at least 3 cards in a line to represent your stepping stones. Contemplate how they reflect the shift you are making. You now have a visual snapshot of your empowered shift. Take a photograph and a few notes to refer back to daily!!

Ask Spirit for a response to your proposed path! Ask the question:

Does this pathway forward align with the heart of my prayer?

Reflect on Spirits final response. You are engaging with the Universe. Own your destiny and trust your own divine wisdom through this process. Through your dark and your light you create a beautiful experience for yourself.

This is only one approach. Whether you use Tarot, or tea leaves, or the flight of birds… Spirit is always speaking to you. Awakening yourself to the world around you puts you in deep communion with everything. That is the heart of prayer.

The heart of prayer is the bravery to be an artist and observer of the world around you.

Make big magic out there! Do big things. Trust yourself, and your creative vision. And most of all… be wild and free!

What makes your heart sing? What empowers you? What makes you feel alive with magic?

Comment below. Leave a question, or share an experience!

I would love to hear about your experience. How do you pray? How do you make sacred space? How do you honor yourself in this big, crazy world?

I love this post because I have found myself doing this lately. For a long time I just couldn’t put the two together consciously because of my religious upbringing but in the last month or so I have found myself reading as prayer before I realize it and it’s a very comfortable and natural approach when I stop judging myself from eyes that aren’t mine.

What a beautiful way to look at interacting with the Tarot. Instead of just being a passive recipient of information, you are interacting, listening and responding. Excellent post!

This sounds very interesting to me. Thank you so much for sharing this. God bless.

Wonderful advice! I’m reminded of the process of inspirational writing; ask a question, let the response flow from your Higher Self/Divine into your mind, down your arm, through your hand, translated into script, then read the response and ask more questions, if necessary.

What a wonderful comparison! At the end of the day it’s all the same…connecting with source, opening up… Listening!

I know I’m a few years late to the party, but great article!! I have always used my cards to talk to spirit, in a not so conventional tarot way. It’s exciting to see others have had the same ideas. Thank you for sharing your experiences.
